Vocations Guide

Vocations are the name given to the class system in Dragon Quest IX. When you start the game, your main character will be a Minstrel. When you reach Stornway, you can recruit a party of up to 3 other characters for a total of 4 in the party. You can choose the vocation for each of these character from the 6 "basic" vocations. 6 more "advanced" vocations can be unlocked by doing specific quests throughout the game. Each vocation has a level limit of 99. [editor's note: apparently there is a way to reset a level 99 character to level 1 after you've defeated the last boss?]

When you reach Alltrades Abbey and finish the storyline quest to defeat Master of Nu'un, you will be able to change vocations there at any time afterwards. When you change vocations, you will resume your progress in that vocations where you left off. For the first time you change to another vocation, this means you will be starting at level 1. However, your progress in your old vocation is saved.

Example: You reach level 15 as a Minstrel, then change to Warrior. You will be a level 1 Warrior. You then progress to level 10 as a Warrior. If you change back to a Minstrel, you will be a level 15 Minstrel again. After changing back to Minstrel, if you were to change back to Warrior, you'd still be a level 10 Warrior.

Skills Guide

Skill points are earned through leveling. Each vocation gains skills separately and all skill points gained are "pooled" into your character's total skill points until you spend them. Example: You gain 22 skill points (level 14) as 5 different vocations. You then change to the Martial Artist vocation and go into the menu to "Allocate skill points". You then spend 100 points in the Fan skill, giving you the ability to use a Fan very well as any vocation, and 10 skill points left over. Knowing that experience costs rise exponentially as you gain levels, this can be used as a quick way to build a very strong early-game character.

All vocations gain skill points at the same rate per level. Here is a table showing the amount of points gained per level as well as a cumulative running total.

Level Points Total Level Points Total Level Points Total Level Points Total
1 - - 26 5 57 51 2 136 76 - 168

19 - 34 44 4 122 69 2 160 94 - 192
20 4 38 45 4 126 70 - 160 95 2 194
21 4 42 46 - 126 71 2 162 96 2 196
22 - 42 47 3 129 72 2 164 97 - 196
23 5 47 48 3 132 73 - 164 98 2 198
24 5 52 49 - 132 74 2 166 99 2 200
25 - 52 50 2 134 75 2 168 Max - 200

As you can see, the maximum amount of skill points is 200 per vocation, or 2400 total. There are 26 skill in the game, so this allows you to max 24 of them. This should be more than enough, as it's only necessary to max out 1-3 weapon skills, depending on how much you wish to change weapons.
